What Makes Great Teaching?

Image
I think great teaching involves care, love, acceptance, selflessness, and being attentive. One thing teachers don't get, is that the students will tell you what they need, if you allow them to. That's why I enjoyed the Empathy Limiting Mistake assignment. It allows the teacher to see how certain students think, feel, and how they should view things in the world. It also allows the teacher to be aware of what the students have gone through and how they felt about their mistake, or how someone else's mistake made them feel. I also feel like the 3 Minute Pause assignment, allows the students to be aware of their own actions. It lets them reflect on their own views, and view of others. It allows the students to understand the impact that certain events have had on others. My favorite assignment had to be Word it Out. It allows students to pin out phrases and words that have impacted them or which words stood out to them most. It allows the students to reflect on what they

Why Are Schools Still Segregated?

Image
Brown V. Board of education was the foundation of integrating schools in 1954, but today, we still see segregation. Why? Why are schools still segregated? I think the main reason schools are still segregated is because some of the staff and educators still believe in the segregation mindset. Sadly, this affects the students and how students of color are treated differently. Many educators will try to single out students of color, but will allow white students to get away with certain behavior. Also, when a lot of teachers make groups in the classroom, often times you'll see them group students by race. I have experienced this in school because I am a Hispanic woman, and many teachers would put me in a group with fellow Hispanics or someone of color. Of course I didn't mind, but you could tell that the teachers only wanted the white students to succeed in the classroom.  Another thing that can affect the students, is how the teacher talks, teaches and educates certain stud

Whose are told and whose remains in the margins?

Image
As many of us know, the main history that is told is based on "white history." A lot of this history is true, but the school system doesn't provide information about the bad, ugly, or they underline the actual facts of these parts in history. It sucks to see that a lot of school systems makes minority cultures look bad or evil. Sadly, this is what many of us grew up learning about. "The white history is the only good side," but that's completely wrong because minorities had to fight for their freedom, and they barley have it, today. Even though I grew up learning about MLK, or the KKK... kids aren't allowed to learn that now, because of the new laws and regulations. Teachers are also getting fired for allowing discussion and free speech in their class about minorities, BLM, and even LBGTQ+, and that's just so heartbreaking to me. So do I really think things are getting better? Absolutely not, because so many states are now inse

How Do We Talk About The Issues That Matter?

Image
Many people believe that it's hard to have conversations about issues that matter, but I believe other wise. I think people believe this, because of the way the school system teaches students. The school system hides the ugly, and truth of history because they don't want to "offend" people, but the feelings they're protecting are the white students, parents, grandparents, etc. I'm half white myself, and I realized that the school hides the truth from us. When I was in elementary and intermediate school, I would buy history, biography, and autobiography books, so I could find out the truth and be able to read the truth with my own eyes. It's sad that our schools are hiding a lot from the students.      I think we need to start addressing matters at a young age. We could show videos, power-points, and even read books to students about the truth. This would allow students to understand the facts at a young age, and not just listen to what's being sai

What is the Purpose of Schools? Who are marginalized students in schools and what do they need from our school system?

Image
What is the Purpose of Schools?       The purpose of schools is to allow kids to have the opportunity to learn, comprehend, and set goals in a safe and healthy environment. This allows kids to make mistakes and learn from them in a non-judgemental setting. Think about this ... Does school actually help your kids out in the real world? I would have to say yes, and for two reasons ... For one, if a student wants to go get a degree and stay in school, then I would say that school did help them in the real world, because they're going to take off with the career they majored in. My second reasoning, schools can also help young adults realize that getting a degree is not for everyone. Yes, it's good to see kids go off to college, but at the same time, they have a choice of what they want to do in this world. Not everything needs a degree, but it's always good to have a back up plan.      Who are marginalized students in schools and what do they need from our school system?

About Me:       Hi! My name is Raegan Olvera and I'm a freshman here at Texas State. I love to workout, hike, bake, and spend time with family/friends. I'm currently living at home due to some mental health issues, and I just wanted to say... if anyone needs someone to talk to lean on, I'm always hear to listen. Please remember that mental health is just as important as physical health!  Favorite Tik-Tok Page:      @Taylorrrrgrace is my favorite page on tik-tok about teachers. For one, she's a kindergarten teacher and that's the grade level I would love to teach. She's very passionate about her job and cares for her students like they are her own!  Why Teach:      I've always wanted to be a teacher since I was little. I use to play school with my dad when I was younger, and I made him be the student... he was a bad "student" lol. My father kind of influenced me to bec
