What is the Purpose of Schools?

The purpose of schools is to allow kids to have the opportunity to learn, comprehend, and set goals in a safe and healthy environment. This allows kids to make mistakes and learn from them in a non-judgemental setting. Think about this ... Does school actually help your kids out in the real world? I would have to say yes, and for two reasons ... For one, if a student wants to go get a degree and stay in school, then I would say that school did help them in the real world, because they're going to take off with the career they majored in. My second reasoning, schools can also help young adults realize that getting a degree is not for everyone. Yes, it's good to see kids go off to college, but at the same time, they have a choice of what they want to do in this world. Not everything needs a degree, but it's always good to have a back up plan.

Who are marginalized students in schools and what do they need from our school system?

Coming from a smaller school, our marginalized students were often minorities or LGBTQ+ students. These students were often judged and treated unequally by administration, teachers and peers. It's very sickening that these students had to deal with it, including myself. I will never understand the full experience that some of these students did because I'm half Mexican and half White, but I've had people say racial slurs towards me and they even tried to define my own ethnicity. Our schools should 100% do a better job on treating others equally, teaching facts instead of opinions, and honestly... teach more than white history. In the classroom, in sports, in extra school activities ... Schools need to give a fair and equal opportunity to everyone, not just a specific race of people. Schools need to understand that the LGBTQ+ community is growing and expanding, so we need to make these students feel comfortable whenever they set foot into the school building. It all starts with the administration, because most of the time, your teachers or students are going to follow what they think. There are very few administrators, teachers, and students that are ready for uncomfortable conversations, learning new things, understanding different cultures, understanding someone's sexuality ... I think we need a huge change, because students should feel comfortable and safe at school.
